Sun Microsystems enters x86 server virtualization arena
Sun Microsystems Inc. introduced a new server virtualization product called Sun xVM for x86 servers, which will be available later this summer. The bare-metal hypervisor is based on Citrix Systems Inc.’s open source Xen technologies and Solaris. It can host several guest operating systems, including Windows and Linux.

OpenOffice.org 3 beta lands
Sun Microsystems yesterday released the first beta of OpenOffice.org 3 for Windows and Mac.
The open source rival to Microsoft Office now natively supports Mac OS X without the need to install the X11 module to run the suite first. The beta also includes full Vista and partial VBA support.

OpenSolaris: What Ubuntu wants to be when it grows up
Sun will release its May 2008 build of OpenSolaris (2008.05) the Open Source operating system based on the source code of the Solaris 10 enterprise UNIX OS, the first to be designated with “Production” support offerings. While very much community software and not yet at the level of polish for end-user adoption that many of the latest Linux distributions are now enjoying — shows promise and enormous potential as an enterprise-class UNIX desktop and server with an Ubuntu-like flavor.
