Sun posts profit as costs fall
Sun Microsystems, the world’s third-largest maker of computer servers for businesses, said on Monday it swung to a quarterly profit from a year-earlier loss as it reduced costs, sending the shares higher.

Sun To Release 8-Core Niagara 2 Processor
Sun Microsystems is set to announce its eight-core Niagara 2 processor next week. Each core supports eight threads, so the chip handles 64 simultaneous threads, making it the centerpiece of Sun’s “Throughput Computing” effort.

Java FX Mobile offers opportunities
JavaFX Mobile is a software platform for advanced mobile devices. It is designed to allow developers to create sophisticated applications and network-based services. The system is built around open and standards-based technologies.
The Java programming language was developed by Sun Microsystems. At Sun’s last count in May, there were about 1.5 billion Java-enabled phones in circulation. But, so far, Java on mobile devices has been used mostly for niche applications, such as games.

Solaris Now Runs on Intel Architecture Rack and Blade Servers
“Two of our Intel platforms are now certified to run Sun Solaris 10,” says Whitfield, “which is the version of Solaris deployed in carrier-grade networks. These are the first Intel carrier-grade server products that will support both Solaris OS and Linux. We already support several different ‘flavors’ of Linux, and now we’ll also be supporting Solaris on our ‘Woodcrest’ processor-based products.”
